Education

Education is the most effective approach to break out of the cycle of intergenerational poverty

Education is the most important enabler that provides quality and sustainability to one’s life. In India and Bengal, despite many positive changes since independence and the recent introduction of the Right to Education act, challenges exist for the marginal and socioeconomically underprivileged to avail high-quality education. We have identified and built partnerships with a few distinguished and highly reputed nonprofits in and around Kolkata to make a difference in the education of these underprivileged communities.

Our journey till date

We started our efforts supporting a nonprofit, Samaritan Help Mission, which has been serving a socioeconomically backward migrant Muslim community of 700K residents for nearly two decades. Samaritan has been running English medium schools for 6500+ first-generation learners, through which it has transformed the trajectory of the community.
We next started supporting Mukti, a nonprofit working in the rural Sunderbans. For over a decade, Mukti has been running remedial learning centers, now serving 3500+ first-generation learners.
Our latest nonprofit, EkTara, works in the slums of Tiljala & Topsia, focusing on education for ~850 girls to provide them with high-quality English-medium education and prevent early childhood marriage.

Transformational initiatives

We are now also actively seeking opportunities with our ground partners to embark on transformational initiatives that can make a sustainable difference in the education space.
One particular area is becoming important. The large learning gap created by Covid is affecting a whole generation of underprivileged children. The socio-economic divide, that always existed in children’s education quality, has gotten deeper due to Covid and the digital divide. Without a strategic and collaborative intervention here, we run the risk of losing a whole generation of children from the benefit of education.
